Traced origins to Robert McVitie, 1809-83, who with his father, William, established a provisions shop in Edinburgh in c1830. By 1850s working as a baker and confectioner. Succeeded by his son, Robert, d1910, who expanded the business as a biscuit manufacturer and cake maker. c1888 joined by Charles Price and business renamed McVitie & Price. Opened large factories at Willesden, London, 1890s, and Manchester, 1914. In 1910 business controlled by general manager, later chairman, (Sir) Alexander Grant, 1864-1937. Incorporated 1911. Developed into a leading UK biscuit and cake making business deploying advertising, brand use and other innovative marketing practices. 1948 merged with Macfarlane Lang & Co Ltd to form United Biscuits Ltd
