Hugh McIntosh, 1768-1840, was a leading civil engineering contractor and perhaps the first in Britain to have a nationally spread organisation. Had substantial interests in canal and dock building and also in construction of waterworks, gasworks, turnpikes, bridges, railways, etc. Won contracts throughout country covering, for example, London docks, Grand Trunk Canal system, royal dockyards, London & Greenwich Railway. Joined by his son, David, d1856, from c1830s when emerged as leading railway contractors working in particular for Great Western Railway on its London Bristol main line.
