Traced origins to (Sir) William McArthur, 1809-1887, who in early 1830s worked at Londonderry in partnership with John Cather, and from 1835 on his own account, as a woollen merchant. By 1840s exporting especially to Australia and New Zealand where developed a network of branches which also exported Australasian goods. Established a London operation in 1854 which became business's major office. Emerged in London as a leading business building a wide range of interests in finance and insurance
