Built a leading cotton spinning business based on Britannia Mills, Mossley, which was sometime known as John Mayall & Sons. Also acted as a merchant, importing cotton and operating his own merchant ships. In early 1870s retired and succeeded in business by his sons. Later incorporated as John Mayall Ltd
