Traced origins to British Printing Corp, established 1960s, in which Robert Maxwell, 1923-91, acquired a substantial interest in 1981/2. 1982 renamed British Printing & Communications Corp and in 1987 again renamed Maxwell Communications Corp Plc. Acquired Macmillan Publishers of USA in 1988 and later Official Airline Guides. The business, which had been dominated by Maxwell, collapsed in 1991 on Maxwell's death. Robert Maxwell had acquired publishing interests from the late 1940s and established the scientific publisher, Pergamon Press, in c1951. Also in 1951 acquired the book distribution business, Simpkin Marshall which collapsed in 1955. He floated Pergamon in 1964 and, after controversy, bought it back in 1974 for use as a private vehicle. It bought Mirror Group Newspapers Ltd in 1984. In the 1980s he extended his web of private businesses which inter-traded and also became over extended especially in supporting MCC
