Traced origins to c1824 when Colin and William Mather established a textile machinery making business at Salford. 1852 the Mathers joined with William Platt of Salford Iron Works. From mid century came under enlightened leadership of (Sir) William Mather and incorporated 1892. Emerged as a major manufacturer of textile machinery, pumps and fire sprinkler systems. 1978 acquired by Wormald International of Australia
