Traced origins to 1890. Textile merchants with manufacturing interests. Especially involved in making artificial silk/rayon. 1937 acquired Sherborne Silk Mill in Dorset to expand rayon spinning. Focused on spinning fine glass yarn for electrical insulation and fabrics, establishing Marglass Ltd in early 1940s. The latter acquired in 1962 by Courtaulds Ltd and United Merchants & Manufacturers Inc
