Established in 1762 as John & Francis Baring & Co, merchants and merchant bankers. Later known as Sir Francis Baring & Co and as Baring Brothers & Co. Provided trade finance to international merchants and issued bonds for overseas governments, municipalities and businesses, especially railway companies. Especially active re United States, Canada, Argentina and Russia. Collapsed in 1890 when rescued by a Bank of England loan and reconstructed as Baring Brothers & Co Ltd. In 20th century notable for corporate finance activity and later asset management. As Barings Plc collapsed in 1995 as a result of unauthorised trading by N Leeson when assets acquired by ING
