Traced origins to 1847 when legislation passed enabling Corporation to acquire assets of Manchester & Salford Water Co, established in 1808 and sole provider of piped water in Manchester, 1809-51. Effective 1851. Built from the late 1840s to the 1880s a complex of reservoirs in the Longendale Valley, designed by J F La Trobe Bateman, and reckoned a 'pioneering achievement in the history of hydraulic engineering. Subsequently followed by a further scheme - Thirlmere Reservoir and its associated aqueduct - at Allendale, Cumbria, between 1890-1925, which supplied water from 1894
