Notes:

Traced important business interests to Aaron Manby, 1776-1850, who was managing partner in Horseley Coal & Iron Co (qv) of Tipton by 1812. Developed engineering activities of that business so that it made marine engines and, in c1821, built the first iron (steam) ship to go to sea. He soon exported boats to France, in some instance taking an investment interest in the businesses operating them, eg on the Seine. Supported by his son, Charles, 1804-84, he developed important business interests in France, notably in 1822 an engineering works at Charenton, near Paris, where marine engines were made, and Le Creusot Ironworks which he purchased in 1826. He merged the two as Société Anonyme des Mines, Forges & Fonderies du Creusot & de Charenton. In all of this closely associated with another Briton in France, Daniel Wilson. Charles, from, 1835 worked in London as a civil engineer and was closely involved with the administration of the newly formed Institution of Civil Engineers as well as being London agent for Robert Stephenson & Co
