Coal mining at Madeley Wood dates to early times and was of substantial size by late 16th century. By 1730s developed by J U Smitheman, lord of manor, whose son John, with master colliers, established Madeley Wood Co in 1756. Started iron production at Bedlam Furnace. Early on connected with Coalbrookdale Co. by 1797 separated from Coalbrookdale Co when operated by the Reynolds family. By 1802 in hands of Anstice family, especially William Anstice, 1781-1850. Established further pits so that they had seven by 1890, falling to three by 1918. Also mined ironstone, had iron production works and carried on clay and limestone quarrying. Incorporated in 1918 as Madeley Wood Co Ltd and very soon after sold to Cadman family. Reduced to just Kemberton Pit by 1920s. Nationalised 1947
