Traced origins to beginning of 19th century when established by James Low, d1840, and Robert Fairweather. Made textile machinery for local flax, jute, etc, industries. Incorporated 1902. 1924 acquired by John Shaw & Sons (Wolverhampton) Ltd. Acquired by local syndicate in 1933 when in difficulties and in 1948 sold on to McLeod & Co Ltd of Calcutta. Thereafter vested in James F Low (India) Ltd which retained ownership until at least 1970s. 1950s diversified into construction equipment manufacture.
