Traced origins to 1] the Barber family who owned and worked coal mines in Nottinghamshire from 17th century and 2] the Fletcher family who did the same by at least the early 18th century. They were connected by marriage in 1731 and soon were working as a partnership, notably at Bilborough and Strelley. Subsequently owned by Barber family alone. 1787 a partnership was formed by Barber family and Thomas Walker, d1816, a noted mining engineer. They subsequently traded as Barber Walker & Co. By 1800 working c10 collieries. By 1872 operated nine collieries in Nottinghamshire when a leading producer. Robert Harrison was its general manager, 1854-91. Shortly after 1900 opened the important Bentley Colliery, near Doncaster, and in 1917 adding Harwood, Bassetlaw, initially via Harworth Main Colliery Co Ltd, 1917-22. 1918 incorporated when it became a public company. Nationalised 1947 via National Coal Board
