Established 1692 by charter to acquire for a short time lead smelting works near Bristol. 1704 merged with Ryton Co of Newcastle. Developed extensive lead mining and smelting operations at several UK locations including North Wales, Lake District and Teessdale/Derwent Valley/Weardale. Also built accommodation for workforce including first industrial village, at Nenthead. By 1890s in decline and closed 1905. Mines sold to Vieille Montagne Zinc Co of Belgium
