Traced origins to 1836 when established by act of parliament, its chief promoter being Stephen Geary, 1797-1854, an architect. Offices in City of London. Established cemeteries at Highgate and Nunhead, Peckham, which were among London's largest and grandest. Highgate Cemetery opened in 1839, was extended in the mid 1850s and closed in c1975. Nunhead, which opened in 1840, was abandoned when almost full in mid 20th century. The company was severe financial difficulties when it closed in 1960. Then Nunhead and Highgate, as well as Rosebank Cemetery, Edinburgh, passed to the newly formed United Cemeteries Ltd, a subsidiary of Raybar Holdings Ltd
