Incorporated 1908 as a public company to acquire the oil extraction interests in Peru of a syndicate of British investors - Peruvian Petroleum Syndicate - led by Alexander Milne, d1919, and including the powerful agency house of Balfour Williamson & Co Ltd, merchants and merchant bankers. Became a leading oil supplier in Peru although dwarfed by the USA major, International Petroleum Co. Early on established shipping interests. From 1934 established marketing and refining interests in UK including a refinery at Ellesmere Port and acquired another in 1960 through acquisition of Manchester Oil Refinery Ltd. Also acquired in UK speciality chemical businesses such as Dussek Brothers Ltd. 1962 acquired by Burmah Oil Co Ltd
