Traced origins to Justus von Liebig, a German national who developed a beef extract product in 1840s as a substitute for meat. With George C Giebert, established a plant at Fray Bentos, Uruquay, in early 1860s and in 1865 incorporated Liebig's Extract of Meat Co Ltd in London, making use of Lemco as its trademark. Later introduced tinned corned beef and imported frozen meat from South America. Emerged as a major cattle ranching and meat products business. Developed Oxo brand. Acquired by Vestey Group in 1924. A subsidiary was Tanganyika Packers Ltd of Tanzania. 1968 merged with Brooke Bond & Co Ltd to form Brooke Bond Liebig Ltd
