Chartered company established by English merchants in 1581 and throughout much of its history, to 1754, granted exclusive rights to trade with the Levant / Ottomon Empire. Succeeded the Venice Co and the Turkey Co. Exported British manufactures, colonial goods and raw materials, and imported silk, cotton, spices, currants, etc. Based in London and with Middle East headquarters at Aleppo. By mid 18th century had taken the form of a company of merchants. Had trading posts / factories across the Empire. In declined by 18th century and wound up 1825 [2024]
