Traced origins to 1871 when established by Walter Lawrence, d1915, at Waltham Abbey. Had joinery and, later, engineering works at Sawbridgeworth. 1892 renamed Walter Lawrence & Son. Moved to central London 1909. Incorporated 1919. Developed rapidly between wars handling prestigious projects. By 1920s undertaking wide range of projects - courts, municipal buildings, police stations, hoses, flats, factories. Opened Swaffham, Norfolk, branch in early 1940s to facilitate war work. A latter focus was housing. 1992 acquired by Raine Industries
