Traces origins to 1886 when established as Shcwind & Pendleton, commission agents for horses trained at Ladbroke Hall, Worcester, which involved taking horse racing bets (which then and for long after were illegal). Renamed Ladbroke & Co 1902 and relocated in London. Acquired by Max Parker, d1966, in 1956 and developed by his nephew, Cyril Stein, d2011. 1960s established major horse and football betting business and also took bets on other outcomes. Floated 1967. From 1973 diversified increasingly into hotel ownership culminating in acquisition of Stakis Plc in 1999 when renamed Hilton Group Plc. Also diversified into casinos and bingo. On its sale in 2005 renamed Ladbrokes Plc
