Traces origins to 1940s when developed on 750 acre site of the Royal Ordnance Factory, Kirkby, which had been leased, later purchased by Liverpool Corporation. It was the first post war Merseyside industrial estate The estate developed in conjunction with the development of the town of Kirkby as an overspill area for Liverpool. At peak in 1971 employed c26,000 workers and was largest industrial estate in Britain
