Established 1695 by act of the parliament of Scotland with a monopoly of banking in Scotland for 21 years and with limited liability. Intended as a bank to finance trade. Throughout its history has isued its own notes. Started to open branches from 1770s. Opened London branch 1865. 1955 acquired Union Bank of Scotland Ltd followed by British Linen Bank in 1971. 2001 merged with Halifax Plc [Halifax Building Society] to form HBOS Plc. Retained identity with HBOS's place of registration being Edinburgh where corporate head office was located. Following International Financial Crisis acquired by Lloyds Banking Group [2023]
