Traced origins to 1866 when William Kenyon, 1822-90, set up in business with three of his sons as a ropemaker, in particular focusing on transmission ropes. Grew rapidly from 1880s. 1882 formed partnership of William Kenyon & Sons. 1890s diversified into manufacture of thermal insulation, eg for boilers. 1900 established ropemaking business in France. 1902 acquired Woodhouse Brothers of Walton le Dale, ropemakers. Incorporated 1907. From 1909 diversified through acquisition of John Ruscoe & Co Ltd, gas and water engineers; this business in 1920s diversified into motor vehicle repair and sales. 1920s diversified into twine production through several acquisitions and in 1930s built up thermal insulation business especially re power industry and oil refining. Grew by acquisition as well as organically. From 1945 diversified into tape and narrow fabrics manufacture. Continues as William Kenyon & Sons (Ropes & Narrow Fabrics) Ltd
