Traced origins to 1878 when established at Clay Cross by Francis Kenning, d1905, as an oil and hardware shop selling kerosene, petroleum products, etc. Soon known as Frank Kenning & Sons when joined by his son (Sir) George Kenning, 1880-1956, who led the business from 1907. Acquired many motor vehicle/cycle sales franchises from 1910, notably from Ford in 1916 and, later, from Morris Motors. Incorporated as Kennings Ltd in 1930 and converted to a public company in 1939. Expanded rapidly after 1945 both geographically and in activities which came to include car dealerships, petrol retailing, repair services, car hire, hire purchase, motor vehicle body manufacture, especially of milk floats and road tankers, etc. 1986 acquired by Tozer Kemsley & Millbourn
