John Kendrick, c1574-1624, established himself as a merchant in London in the early 17th century although originally he came from Reading. Dealt in woollen cloth exports to Low Countries but also finished cloth in his London manufactory. Achieved great wealth and bequeathed a large part of it to charitable causes, notably to the towns of Newbury and Reading for the establishment of workhouses to give employment to the poor in the manufacture and dyeing of woollen cloth. Newbury Workhouse opened 1627
