Established in London in 1862 as Buenos Aires & River Plate Bank Ltd. Opened first branches, at Buenos Aires and Montevideo, by 1864. Renamed London & River Plate Bank Ltd 1865. Expanded into Brazil from 1891, later into Chile. By 1914 largest British owned overseas bank. 1918 acquired by Lloyds Bank Ltd. 1923 renamed Bank of London & South America Ltd following merger with London & Brazilian Bank Ltd. From 1950s expanded outside South America. 1971 reconstructed as Lloyds & Bolsa International Bank Ltd in which Lloyds had a 55% interest. Fully acquired by Lloyds 1973.
