Traced origins to 1743 when Richard Wright established a goldsmith's business in City of London. In due course John Johnson acquired this business and developed it as an assayer. By 1839, as Johnson & Sons, were manufacturers of fine chemicals when started to make photographic chemicals in which they came to specialise. Expanded rapidly and in 1927 relocated to Hendon. Sometime incorporated as Johnson & Sons Manufacturing Chemists Ltd and renamed Johnsons of Hendon Ltd in 1948. 1940 acquired photographic equipment manufacturers, Houghton Butcher Ltd. Also operated as agents for equipment manufacturers especially located outside UK. Continued to operate retail and wholesale shops in central London until 1970s. 1972 acquired by Hestair Co Ltd and in 1977 sold on to Eumig of Vienna to become Eumig (UK) Ltd
