Traces origins to Virginia & Baltick Coffee House, City of London, in the mid 18th century where merchants and shipowners met to arrange shipment of cargo, freights, charters, etc. 1823 regulation of market and membership admission began. As 19th century progressed its members increasing involved in grain trading. 1857 Baltic Co Ltd formed to acquire new premises. 1900, as 'Baltic Committee' merged with London Shipping Exchange to form Baltic Mercantile & Shipping Exchange Ltd. 1903 purpose built exchange building opened. 1929 diversified into air charters. Continues as the major international marine market dealing in freights, charters and transactions in merchant ships. 2016 acquired by Singapore Exchange
