Notes:

Established 1851 by William Jackson, 1828-1912, as a grocer and tea dealer at Hull. Soon opened additional stores; by 1912 had 12 shops and by 1939 85 located throughout east Yorkshire. Also early on established bakery [1891] and sometime slaughterhouse and jam factory. Incorporated 1904. 1933 opened first cafe. Notably post 1945 grew by acquisition. By 1955 seven bakeries and a variety of other retailing and food processing interests. By 1963 public company. From 1960s introduced computers and established a computer bureau in 1970, from 1976 renamed AIM Ltd which was sold to managers in 1987. Business refocused from 1980s on to food processing and retail interests sold to Sainsbury Plc in 2004. Continues in 2023 as William Jackson Food Group with interests in baking, vegetable processing, etc
