Traced origins to James Whatman, d1759, who in 1739 took over Turkey Mill, Maidstone. Introduced wove paper in 1756 which became the industry standard. By 1759, when Whatman's son, James, took over business, it was largest papermill in Britain. Innovation continued. Managed by William Balston from 1790. Business sold in 1794 to Hollingworth family and continued in 1805 by William Balston from Springfield Mills. 1861 renamed W & R Balston. In 20th century started to focus on filtration paper especially for medical and scientific use. c1973 merged with Reeve Angel International, a public company, to form Whatman, Reeve, Angel Ltd. 1990 renamed Whatman Plc
