Ballantyne family traced origins as woollen cloth manufacturers to David Ballantyne, 1773-1855, who was a master weaver at Galashields from 1796. By c1820s his son, Henry, 1802-65, was making tweed at Innerleithen and later returned to Galashiels where he was a pioneer in production of Scotch Tweed. Late 1840s relocated to Walkerburn where a large mill and worker's village were built for production of Scotch Tweed. Known sometime as Ballantyne & Tait and, latterly as Henry Ballantyne & Sons. Under Henry developed into a leading business. On his death in 1865 three of his sons established an independent business, Ballantyne Brothers at Innverleithen. Henry Ballantyne was incorporated 1904. Post 1945 merged with Ballantyne Brothers to form Scottish Worsteds & Woollens which was absorbed by Dawson International in 1981
