Traced origins to late 1920s when formed as International Combustion Ltd by merger of Underfeed Stoker Co Ltd of Derby, established as Automatic Furnace Syndicate Ltd in 1898 at London, and Combustion Engineering Ltd, formed at Barrow in Furness in 1924 as Vickers & International Combustion Engineering Ltd. The former made furnace stoker machinery and the latter rollers for converting coal to dust for burning in furnaces. Thereafter specialised in building boilers of all sizes, milling plant and related equipment. Built specialist equipment for nuclear power generation. Late 1990s acquired by Rolls-Royce. In wartime had built guns, mines, torpedoes, tank parts, ship equipment including funnels, etc
