Notes:
Established by royal charter in 1888 to administer and develop economically territory in East Africa out of which Kenya and Uganda were ultimately formed. Promoted in particular by Sir William MacKinnon. Aimed to facilitated its activities through railway construction, notably the Central Africa Railway which was started in 1890 but very soon abandoned. The company failed in its objectives and in 1894 its territory taken under direct British administration to become 'Protectorates', the British government thereupon itself building the railway, known as the Uganda Railway. 1897 surrendered its charter
