Traced origins to 1742 when established by Benjamin Huntsman, 1704-1776, clockmaker. He invented a means of making molten steel in clay crucibles which produced high quality steel in ingots and remained the method of steel making until invention of Bessemer bulk process in 1856. By 1751 was a leading steel maker although producing in small quantities. Succeeded in business by his son, William, 1733-1809, who also developed important button making interests. In 19th century works were rebuilt and early on, under Francis Huntsman, were of major importance. By end of century in decline
