Notes:

Traced origins to John Holman, 1800-63, a Topsham shipowner who owned 13 vessels by 1863. Also established early insurance interests especially through local shipowners' mutual clubs, West of England Marine Insurance Association in 1832 and Exeter Shipping Insurance Association in 1838. 1855 established West of England Steamship Owners Protection & Indemnity Association of which Holmans were long term managers. Acquired local shipbuilding business in 1842 which emerged as Topshams' largest yard. Yard closed 1874. Known as John Holman & Sons from 1864 when relocated insurance activities to London. Incorporated 1900. Sold ships in 1913 although acquired interest in and management of Dene Shipping Co in 1930s. 1950s established an insurance broking business which became independent of other activities in 1952. Continues as insurance brokers
