Traced origins to the business of Noah Hingley, 1795-1877, who started to make ship's chains in c1820 although his business predates this. 1850s established associated iron making and coal mining interests. Developed into a world leading anchor and chain making business by (Sir) Benjamin Hingley, 1830-1905. Incorporated 1890. Another part of the Hingley family's business interests formed into Hartshill Iron Co Ltd. Made numerous acquisitions including British Iron Co in 1894. Diversified into other metal working areas after 1918. 1966 acquired by F H Lloyd & Co Ltd of Wednesbury although continued as a separate entity
