Traced origins to 1810 when established by Ephraim Hinde, b1773. Subsequently traded as E & F Hinde and, later, as Fras Hinde & Son and, from 1878, as Fras Hinde & Sons. Incorporated 1901. Early on specialised in dress fabrics and, from 1880s, in mourning crape. Converted to public company in 1924 on withdrawal of Hinde family. From 1920s acquired other local businesses to dominate local industry and to become a leading national manufacturer of silk and rayon fabrics for dresses and lingerie
