Traced origins to Rothwell Hick & Co, established 1824 by, inter alia, Benjamin Hick, 1790-1842. By 1833 known as B Hick & Sons. Came to manufacture stationary steam engines, locomotives, railway equipment, marine engines, etc. Connected with Bolton Iron & Steel Co Ltd, a foundry. In 1830s Hargreaves family, leading north of England carriers until mid 1840s, married into Hick family and in 1845 William Hargreaves became a partner. Known as Hick Hargreaves & Co. Incorporated 1892 as Hick Hargreaves & Co Ltd. In 20th century specialised in manufacturing electricity generation plant. Sold in late 1960s to Electrical & Industrial Securities Ltd, later EIS Group Plc, although retained identity
