Traced origins to William T Henley, c1814-82, who established in 1837 a business making electrical equipment and insulated cable for emerging telegraph systems. Established works at North Woolwich in c1859 and made submarine and land cables as well as undertaking cable laying with own ships. Business was reconstructed in 1880 as W T Henley's Telegraph Works Co Ltd. Works at Gravesend established 1906. c1900 ceased making submarine cables but continued with telephone and electrical cables. Developed other rubber products including tyres, golf balls, etc, which in 1919 were included in Henley's Tyre & Rubber Co Ltd. Involved in providing cable and constructing national grid between wars. 1924 built large research laboratories. 1939-45 made Pluto Pipeline. 1959 acquired by Associated Electrical Industries Ltd [2023]
