Anthony Bacon, c1717-86, started as a London merchant in 1740s, in particular working in the North America tobacco trade. Subsequently a government contractor in the Seven Years War and, later, in the War of American Independence. In between these, involved in slave trade. Latterly acquired coal mine at Workington and developed a major interest in iron making and iron ore mining at Plymouth and, particularly, in South Wales, especially at Cyfarthfa. Merthyr Tydfil. Sometime involved with Isaac Wilkinson and John Wilkinson. Diversified into making cannon for sale to government
