Notes:

Traced origins to Alexander Henderson, 1850-1934, later Lord Farringdon, who in the early 1870s joined the London stockbrokers, Greenwood & Co and, later with his sons, developed it into a major city firm specialising in railways and infrastructure businesses. This drew him directly into the affairs of many such as Manchester Ship Canal Co and Great Central Railway Co. Alongside this he came to operate on his own account as an investment banker, often working in association with Baring Brothers and Sir Ernest Cassell in projects such as the establishment of the National Bank of Turkey. 1889 he acquired from Robert Campbell the country estate at Buscot Park, Oxfordshire, where he and his descendants amassed a distinguished art collection. Post 1918 he was involved in UK corporate finance advice and in the promotion of exports through the establishment of the British Trade Corp. His firm, which merged with Cazenove in 1932, was also important in the development of investment trusts. On his death his very considerable private wealth, much of it long held in Witan Investment Trust Ltd, was placed under the management of a new entity called Henderson Administration Ltd. Post 1945 this emerged as a leading London asset management business which was floated in 1983. In 1998 it was acquired by AMP of Australia
