Traced origins to Samuel Hayward, d1826, who in 1783 established himself in business as a glass cutter and glazier. His three sons developed associated interests in decorating, glass and ironmonger/iron founding, especially with the business that later became Chater & Sons Ltd, glass merchants. 1848 Edward and William Hayward purchased iron founding and ironmongery wholesaling business of R Henley & Co, Union St, Southwark which became Hayward Brothers. Made kitchen ranges, stoves, etc. Soon diversified into other builders' ironmongery products, glass including pioneering pavement lighting, glazing, etc. 1880 renamed Hayward Brothers & Eckstein. Iron founding hived off into Southwark Foundry Co in 1880s. 1891 merged with Cottam & Willmore. Incorporated 1896. 1901 acquired Alliance Ventilating Co. 1911 diversified as heating engineers. 1916 renamed Haywards Ltd. After 1918 major works at Enfield established. Continued until recent years
