Traced origins to a wholesale grocery business at Colne that William P Hartley, 1846-1922, developed out of his parents' grocery business. Started jam making which soon was his principal interest. In 1874 established a factory at Bootle followed by a much larger one at Aintree in 1885. In this year business incorporated as William Hartley & Sons Ltd. 1901 opened a factory at Southwark, London, to serve southern England. 1888 built an industrial village and in 1889 started profit sharing. Reorganised in 1920 as Wm P Hartley (London & Aintree) Ltd. Hartley developed large interests in cotton manufacturing businesses which he transferred to the new business in early 1920s. 1960s acquired by Schweppes Ltd
