Traced origins to 1859 when formed at Leicester by Maurice and (Sir) Israel Hart and Joseph Levy as clothing wholesalers. Maurice Hart had established an outfitting business in Canterbury in c1820 and subsequently opened branches throughout Kent and Sussex and became well known as a high class tailor and outfitter. Levy's firm was a Leicester based ready to wear and bespoke tailor. The new wholesale business soon established a factory at Leicester followed by others at Burton Latimer, Nuneaton, Liverpool, etc. Developed as leading producers of inexpensive ready made clothing. From 1890s started retailing and by 1895 had 18 shops; adopted the trading name of 'Grand Clothing Hall'. Retailing operation subsequently grew substantially and trading name changed to John Manners Ltd. Incorporated 1897. Continuing in 1959 as a family owned business. Sometime subsequently acquired by John Barran Ltd
