Traced origins as carriers to John Hargreaves of Wilton, Blackburn, in the 17th century. Under his grandson, John, 1739-96, at Westhoughton, business emerged as a major north of England carrier. Under John Hargreaves, 1780-1860, diversified into canal carrying and under his son, also John, 1800-74, moved into railway carrying and was especially connected with Bolton & Leigh Railway from c1831. Railway business lost in 1840s following amalgamations of railway companies. Carrying assets sold 1845. Subsequently Hargreaves family became involved through marriage in the engineering business of Benjamin Hicks of Soho Ironworks, Bolton, which came to be known as Hick Hargreaves & Co Ltd
