Notes:

Traced origins to Thomas Hancock, 1786-1865, formerly of Marlborough, who was working in London from c1815 as a coachbuilder in partnership with his brother John. Became interested in rubber production, patenting many inventions, 1820-47, especially re vulcanisation of rubber in competition with Charles Goodyear of USA. Established in 1820 a rubber products making factory at Goswell Rd, Islington, and became associated with Charles Macintosh & Co of Manchester in which in due course he was also a partner. His London business subsequently passed to his nephew and became known as James Lyne Hancock Ltd. Made a very wide range of goods - surgical equipment, gas bags, water bottles, garments, sheeting, gaskets, etc, etc. Acquired by British Tyre & Rubber Co Ltd, later BTR Plc, in c1937
