Traced origins to the Australasian Steam Navigation Co in 1851 when an earlier business established in 1839 - Hunter River Steam Navigation Co - was reorganised. Initially provided coastal shipping services, later deep sea services. In 1886 Queensland Steamship Co, a connection of British India Steam Navigation Co and of the Mackinnon Mackenzie group, merged with ASNC to form in 1887 Australasian United Steam Navigation Co Ltd controlled by the group. This was then a leading Australian based shipping business but it went into gradual decline. By 1960 it was fully owned by the Inchcape Group and soon sold its few remaining ships
