Traced origins to 1850 when James Austin, d1892, became a partner in Harrison & Pagett, millwrights. By 1860s business was merchanting a wide range of iron goods to textile industry, including saw blades. Emerged as 'iron merchants'. Incorporated 1903 and reorganised 1923. Late 1930s established a constructional engineering department and became a leading supplier and erector of steel framed buildings. 1940 acquired Astley Brook & Co Ltd, manufacturers of portable garages and greenhouses. Latterly steel stockholders and structural steelwork engineers. 1983 acquired by Trumanns Steel Group
