Established by Robert Grosvenor. 1790 Eliezer Chater became a partner in what was then known as Welles Grosvenor & Chater. From c1830s Stationery Office a major customer. Established papemaking at Abbey Mill, Greenfield, Holyhead, in 1854 and Glory Mill, High Wycombe, in 1859. Latter closed 1894. Incorporated 1889. 1947 established a stationery factory. Moved headquarters to St Albans 1977. 1970s diversified into paper merchanting. Closed Abbey Mill 1982. Wound up 1990s
