Traces origins to the early 19th century and the Griffin family's bookselling, precision instrument selling and scientific publishing businesses of Glasgow and London established by John J Griffin, 1802-77. Moved to London 1848 when the publishing side split off into Charles Griffin & Co. The other business was later known as John J Griffin & Sons. Incorporated 1889. c1900 started to make and sell photographic paper. 1926 merged with Baird & Tatlock Ltd of Scotland. Known as Griffin & Tatlock Ltd from 1928 and, later, as Griffin & George Ltd. 1972 merged with A Gallenkamp & Co Ltd which was acquired by Fisons Ltd in 1977. Formed Fisons' education division
